Great Britain Sovereign gold coins were introduced in 1817 during the reign of King George III. The modern sovereign as it now exists was inspired by the previous English gold sovereign coins introduced by King Henry VII in 1489 and halted by King James I of England in 1603. As of 1979, the Great Britain Sovereign gold coins are only available as bullion and proof specimens.

Obverse

The obverse of Great Britain Double Sovereign Gold coins features an effigy of the monarch of England. As the monarch portrait is updated or a new monarch rises to the throne, the design is adjusted. The most common designs you are likely to find are those of Queen Elizabeth II. Not only is she the longest-reigning monarch in British history, she is also the reigning monarch who ruled the last half of the 20th century. Other possible portraits include those of Queen Victoria, King George V, and King George VI.

Reverse

On the reverse of Great Britain Double Sovereign Gold coins is the image of St. George, the patron saint of England, on horseback as he rides toward and slays a dragon. St. George slays the dragon with his long spear. While designs on the obverse have changed, this design has remained largely the same and was created in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci. Certain coins from the reign of Queen Victoria could feature the Royal Arms.

History

The Great Britain Double Sovereign Gold coins have a different availability than the standard Great Britain Sovereign Gold coin. The Double Sovereign was struck in 1820, but not initially released. In 1887, the Double Sovereign was finally introduced and available until 1914 when sovereign production ended in Britain. The coins returned in 1957 and became bullion and proof coins only in 1979.

Ordering

These Great Britain Double Sovereign Gold Coins are available with a protective flip and come from random years. We do not guarantee specific date marks and designs as all coins are chosen at random once your payment is processed.
