When you purchase the Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coins in this Provident Metals listing, you are purchasing coins that are from mixed types of sovereigns and with varying dates. The coins have been issued on a consistent basis cine 1817 and come with varying designs of British monarchs based on the date of issue.

Provident Metals cannot promise a particular date and design in advance. All items are chosen after your payment clears and picked from available inventory at that point in time. If you buy several, please bear in mind you may get coins with the same types and dates.

Obverse

On the obverse of Great Britain Sovereigns is a portrait of Englands reigning monarch. The monarch featured on the coins will match the date mark. Queen Elizabeth II is the most likely to feature on these coins as she has graced the Great Britain Sovereign since 1952 with five different effigies of Her Majesty used during this period.

Reverse

The reverse side of most Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coins comes with Benedetto Pistruccis original 1817 effigy of St. George slaying a dragon. St. George is shown in right-profile relief on horseback as he slays the dragon with a spear. Certain date marks have the Royal Arms of England or another commemorative design. This is most frequently done for special anniversary releases.

History

Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coins are 22-karat gold coins. Modern Great Britain Sovereigns have 91.67% gold with the remaining balance consisting of copper. Over the centuries, Great Britain Sovereigns have evolved from early-19th century specimens that had 91.2% gold with a 50-50 mix of copper and silver to those that have predominantly copper as the remaining alloy.
