The potential dates range from 1957 to 1968, with one of two different portraits of Elizabeth II. All coins are chosen randomly after your payment clears, and it’s possible to receive matching coins if you purchase multiple. We cannot ensure a specific year or design.

Obverse

The obverse of the Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins features Queen Elizabeth II. The coins in this listing might have either the first-generation portrait or the second-generation portrait of the Queen. From 1952 to 1964, The Royal Mint used Mary Gillick’s portrait of Elizabeth II with a laurel wreath tiara. From 1965 to 1984, Arnold Machin’s second-generation bust of Her Majesty with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara was used.

Reverse

On the reverse, all Great Britain Gold Sovereigns listed here showcase St. George on horseback slaying a dragon, a design by Benedetto Pistrucci created in 1817. This design has been a consistent feature on nearly all Gold Sovereigns for the last two centuries.

History

Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins have been produced since 1817. During the 20th century, their production pattern changed. Rather than being issued annually as circulation coinage, Queen Elizabeth II’s reign saw the Gold Sovereign predominantly produced as proof or bullion coins.
