The reverse displays the fighting scene between Saint George and the Dragon, designed by Benedetto Pistrucci in 1817. The year is inscribed below the action.
As one legend has it, a dragon lived in a pond in the town of “Silene” and was fed sheep each day. When no sheep were available, children were fed to the dragon through a lottery system. The king’s daughter was chosen one day, and as she walked toward the pond, Saint George rode by on his horse and saved the girl. He lured the dragon back into town and slew it in front of a crowd he was hoping to convert to Christianity.
