Gold sovereign coins first swept Great Britain in 1489. They were determined to be too valuable to use in economic trade and commerce. By 1817, sovereign coins had reemerged with more gold content and a face value of 1 Pound Sterling. These coins are now largely issued as investment-grade gold bullion coins. Today, you can purchase Great Britain Sovereign King Edward Gold Coins from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in protective plastic flips!
  • Issued from 1902 to 1910!
  • Each coin contains .2354 Troy oz of actual gold.
  • Obverse features the effigy of King Edward VII.
  • Reverse image shows St. George battling a dragon.

Each of the coins in this listing were minted between 1902 and 1910. These, along with other coins that were created during the reign of King Edward VII are rare finds in the modern age. This is due, in part, to the shortness of his reign.

Obverse

On the obverse of each of these coins is the right-profile portrait of an aging King Edward VII. In the image, he is balding and had a thick beard. In this depiction, he isnt sporting a crown. Engraved on this side of the coin are King Edwards name and country.

Reverse
On the reverse side of each of these coins is the image of St. George on horseback as he battles a dragon. St. George has been a staple of modern gold sovereign coins since 1817, with only a few years during the reign of Victoria I straying from this beautiful design that was created in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci.

History

These coins were issued as sovereign coins during the reign of King Edward VII, who only sat on the throne from 1901 to 1910. Production on these coins began in 1902. Edward VII ascended to the throne on January 22, 1901 after his mothers death. The death of Queen Victoria I marked the end of the longest reign that the English throne had seen at the time.
