History

The US Mint first started issuing commemorative coins in 1848. At the time, there was no programmatic approach to the issuance of these early coins. However, most of the coins were released to celebrate important historical US figures or events. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower stopped production of commemorative coins due to a lack of interest from the American people.
