Each coin is composed of approximately 95 percent copper, with a diameter of 19mm and a weight of three grams.
The obverse features an American Indian — believed to be modeled after Lady Liberty — wearing a headdress. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date of mintage are inscribed.
The reverse has a simple design, featuring a laurel wreath encircling the words ONE CENT.
The Indian Head Cent was produced by the United States Mint from 1859 to 1909. The obverse and reverse designs were originally created by James Barton Longacre, the Philadelphia Mint’s Chief Engraver.
The cent became extremely popular during the Civil War Era, when metals were in short supply. Their popularity continued to rise after the war, until the coins were eventually replaced by the Lincoln Cent in 1909.
