Obverse

Just over two-and-a-half years into his first term as President of the United States of America, President Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963. By January 1964, the Treasury and the United States Mint had agreed upon a new design for the Half Dollar and had the coins available to the public by March 1964. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2020.

Reverse

Designed by Frank Gasparro and based on the heraldic eagle, it features a front-facing bald eagle clutching the olive branch of peace and the arrows of war in its talons. The bird supports the US national shield and is surrounded by a ring of stars. The inscriptions on this face read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, and Half Dollar.

History

Following the death of President John F. Kennedy, it was First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy who pushed for her late husbands effigy to go on the US Half Dollar. The original plan and consideration was to replace the effigy of President George Washington on the US Quarter, but Mrs. Kennedy did not wish to see her husband replace the nations first president.
