Front Design The Gold Peso's obverse design consists of an inspiring image of Nike, the winged Roman Goddess of Victory. The design symbolizes the iconic "Angel de la Independencia" or the "Angel of Independence." In the background are etchings of two of Mexico's most iconic landmarks, the Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl volcanoes. The gold coin's front design also includes its face value of 50 pesos and the year of mintage.
Rear Design The reverse design of the Mexican Gold Peso includes the country's coat of arms with an eagle holding a serpent in its beak. Other denominations of the peso include a portrait of Don Miguel Hidalgo, the beloved priest and leader of the effort to free Mexico from Spanish rule.
Brief History The Mexican Gold Peso coin was produced by the oldest mint in North America, the Mexico City Mint. It was first issued in 1921 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain. At the time, the Gold Peso was the purest gold coin produced. The Gold Pesos were produced throughout the 20th century in denominations ranging from 50 pesos to 2 pesos (face value).
