Mexican Libertad Silver Coins now feature eight options in the silver bullion series. The first coin issued was the 1 oz silver coin, available by itself from 1982 to 1990. In 1991, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz silver coins were added to the series. The series expanded two more times in the next decade with the 1996 introduction of 2 oz and 5 oz silver, and the 2008 introduction of 1 Kilo silver.

Obverse

Winged Victory is featured on the obverse side of Mexican Libertad 1/20 oz Silver Coins. The design shown here depicts Winged Victory as found atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City. The coins issued from 1991 to 1995 have the original 1921 image of Victory that debuted on the gold Centenario circulation coin. All coins issued from 1996 onward have a modern vision of Victory. Both depictions capture the same effigy of Victory, but the initial coins have a front-facing Victory bust while the 1996-onward coins have a left-profile bust of Victory. Inscriptions on this face read 1/20 Onza, Plata Pura, and Ley .999. Other markings include the date mark and the Mexican Mints OM mint mark.

Reverse

Mexicos national coat of arms is found on the reverse of Mexican Libertad Silver Coins. While the larger coins of 1 oz silver and above feature 10 historic versions of the seal around the modern design, these fractional-ounce coins only have the modern coat of arms in the design element. The seal includes a golden eagle struggling with a serpent on a cactus perch. There is a cactus wreath below the emblem and the words Estados Unidos Mexicanos above the seal.

History

The Mexican Mint was founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors to refine gold and silver found in Central America. The mint would go on to produce Spanish colonial currency for the empires colonies in the Western Hemisphere. Today, the federal government oversees the Mexican Mint and Banco de Mexico oversees its operations.
