The Rand Refinery was founded in 1920 with the goal of refining South African gold. Prior to the establishment of the Rand Refinery, gold from South Africa was refined in London. Due to the Rand Refinery’s establishment, the supply of gold from South Africa to London, was essentially nonexistent by 1922.
The South African Mint is the only mint allowed to manufacture bullion and legal tender coinage for the country, however, the Rand Refinery is the one that supplies all precious metals used by the sovereign mint. Learn more about the Rand Refinery right here, at Provident Metals.
The one product most commonly associated with the Rand Refinery is the South African Krugerrand. The South African Gold Krugerrand is the oldest modern gold bullion coin in the world. These coins debuted in 1967 and have been issued annually ever since. What makes this coin program even more special is the fact that the design of both the obverse and the reverse has remained the same since the inception of the series.
The obverse of these coins shows Paul Kruger in left-profile relief while the reverse features the Springbok antelope, the official symbol of the Republic of South Africa. These coins are available in a 1 oz size, as well as fractional ounce weights. Coins are also produced with 22-karat gold.
For the 50th year of release, the Rand Refinery and the South African Mint started issuing South African Silver Krugerrands. These 99.9% pure silver coins are available in a 1 oz and a 2 oz size. Both BU and proof strikes are available.
The Rand Refinery does issue bullion bars. You can find a 1 oz gold bar produced by the Rand Refinery at Provident Metals. This 1 oz gold bar is a minted ingot crafted with 99.99% pure gold and is shipped inside a sealed black assay card.
