Perhaps the most coveted US silver dollar design, the Morgan Dollar is popular with investors and has relatively good availability for modern collectors for a series that originated 140 years ago. In the 1960s, Morgan Dollar enthusiasts were floored by the discovery of some $3 million worth of Morgan Dollars hidden away in US Treasury vaults. The coins were mostly Carson City issues and undid years of presumed rarity for certain date marks. Right now, you can buy Morgan Dollar 3-Coin Silver Sets from the GSA hoard, all from the Carson City Mint.

Provident Metals offers the Morgan Dollar 3-Coin Silver Set to you with three coins, each one representing the date marks 1882, 1883, and 1884. Each one of the coins in this three-coin set was originally struck by the Carson City Mint, a former US Mint branch facility in Nevada that was in operation from 1870-1885 and 1889-1893. All of these coins come from the GSA Morgan Dollar hoard discovered in US Treasury vaults in the 1960s. The coins arrive inside of individual GSA plastic holders with an included presentation box and Certificate of Authenticity. Provident Metals will also provide each customer who purchases this 3-coin set with a Carson City Morgan Dollar guidebook. You can learn more about the coins of the Carson City Mint within its pages, including a feature section on the Morgan Dollars from the GSA Hoard. These coins were packaged in these GSA holders more than 50 years ago. As a result, you may notice wear and tear present on the holders.

Obverse

The obverse side of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins comes with a left-profile image of Lady Liberty. US Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan created this portrait of Liberty in 1878 for the debut of the new silver dollars. The left-profile bust depicts Liberty with her hair in a bun and curls down the side of her head. She wears a coronet that reads Liberty, as well as a wreath crown. E Pluribus Unum is inscribed above her head with the date marks 1882, 1883, or 1884 on the respective coins. There is a circle of 13 stars around Libertys head.

Reverse

On the reverse of each Morgan Dollar Silver Coin is a depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Also designed by Morgan, this image of a front-facing eagle includes the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include United States of America, In God We Trust, and One Dollar.

History

When the US Treasury discovered millions of Morgan Dollars in its vaults in the 1960s, it changed the landscape of the Morgan Dollar collection. Many of the coins came from the Carson City Mint and were never circulated. As it relates to the three date marks in this three-coin set, the GSA counted an inventory of 605,029 1882 coins, 755,518 1883 coins, and 962,638 1884 coins.
