Debuting in 1878, the Morgan Dollar Silver Coin was issued by the United States Mint over the course of five decades that saw the United States go through Reconstruction and the Gilded Age to the Industrial Revolution, the 20th century, and even the Roaring 20s. Even though the coin was issued in large volumes for a single year in 1921, the longest production run was its original 1878-1904 period. Today, you have the opportunity to buy certified Morgan Dollar Silver 5-Coin Sets online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Prior to 1878, the United States Mint had been in the midst of a pause in silver dollar coining. The Coinage Act of 1873 ended the free coining of silver in the United States and resulted in the default cancellation of the Seated Liberty design. The Bland-Allison Act of 1878 authorized the US Treasury to purchase $2 to $4 million in silver at market price each month to support silver dollar coining. With a new design from George T. Morgan, the US silver dollar returned with a new design that became known as the Morgan Dollar Silver Coin.
Obverse
On the obverse of the coins in the Morgan Dollar Silver 5-Coin Set is a portrait of Lady Liberty. Created by Morgan in 1878, the image features Liberty in left-profile relief. She wears a Phrygian cap at the back of her head, a laurel wreath crown, and a coronet crown that has an inscription of the word LIBERTY. The field includes a date mark, 13 stars, and an inscription of E PLURIBUS UNUM along the top.
Reverse
The reverse side of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins features Morgans version of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Designed without the US national shield, this visual shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief with its wings flexed wide as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. The inscriptions on this face include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
Morgan Dollar Silver Coins issued from 1878 to 1904 were struck by the Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Carson City Mints. The Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints struck the coins in each year. The New Orleans Mint struck the coins every year but 1878. The Carson City Mint struck the coins from 1878 to 1885 and again from 1889 to 1893.
