The Morgan Dollar Silver Coin was issued for circulation use by the United States Mint over the course of 28 individual issue years. The bulk of the more than 570 million coins issued during these 28 years came from the early, continuous production cycle of 1878 to 1904, though the 1921 release is notable as the largest single mintage year. Provident Metals now has Morgan Dollar Silver Coins available to you for purchase online in certified condition.
Highlights:
When you purchase a Morgan Dollar Silver Coin through this Provident Metals listing, the coins you receive come with a Mint State 64 certification. Coins in this condition showcase average mint luster for the date mark, and come with a variety of minor-to-moderate flaws. These include several small contact marks, one or two moderately heavy marks, and one or two small patches of hairlines.
Provident Metals offers these coins with the guarantee that all feature a Mint State 64 certifications. However, as a varied listing, we cannot guarantee the date mark or the specific grading house label. These factors will be determined by what is available in our inventory after your payment has cleared and we select coins to fulfill your order.
Obverse
The obverse side of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins features a bust of Lady Liberty. This left-profile portrait was created in 1878 by George T. Morgan and depicts Liberty with a coronet crown and a wreath crown in her hair, as well as a cap on her head with curls flowing from beneath the cap down the back of her neck. The inscriptions on the coin include Liberty on the coronet, E Pluribus Unum at the top, and the date mark below. There are also 13 stars on this side of the coin around the rim.
Reverse
On the reverse face of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is an image of the heraldic eagle of the United States. George T. Morgan also created this visual for the series and offers a smaller bald eagle with its talons clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. His version of the design lacks both the US national shield and a cluster of 13 stars, the latter a result of the inclusion of 13 stars on the obverse. Inscriptions on this side read United States of America, In God We Trust, and One Dollar.
History
George T. Morgan was the designer of the Morgan Dollar Silver Coin. He was hired at the United States Mint as an assistant engraver by William Barber, 5th Chief Engraver of the Mint. His career at the mint continued under Barbers son and 6th Chief Engraver, Charles E. Barber. Upon the death of the younger Barber, Morgan ascended to the position of Chief Engraver of the United States Mint and was the 7th man to hold the title. He continued in the post until his own death in 1925.
