The United States Mint reintroduced two classic silver dollar designs in 2021, bringing the Morgan Dollar and Peace Dollar back into modern production. These historic designs have continued to gain attention from collectors who appreciate their connection to Americas early coinage. By adding these designs to its annual offerings, the Mint has provided collectors and investors with familiar imagery that stands apart from contemporary bullion styles. Currently, certified Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Every Morgan Dollar Silver Coin in this listing has received a Mint State 70 grade, the highest level assigned to circulation-style coins. These examples display strong original luster and no visible flaws. Coins are selected at random, and Provident Metals cannot guarantee a specific year, grading label, or label design. Regardless of these variations, each coin meets the same strict grading standards.
Obverse
The obverse of the Morgan Dollar Coin was designed by George T. Morgan and features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap decorated with cotton and wheat, symbolizing the nations agricultural roots. The portrait reflects classical influences and remains one of the most recognizable images in American coin design. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and the year of issue.
Reverse
The reverse of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins shows a heraldic eagle with wings spread wide. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, representing strength and peace. A partial wreath made of cotton and wheat surrounds the design, tying the reverse imagery back to the obverse. Together, these elements give the Morgan Dollar its balanced and familiar appearance. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
The Morgan Dollar briefly returned to production in 1921 following the passage of the Pittman Act of 1918. This legislation required the melting of older silver dollars and their replacement with newly struck coins. Morgan Dollars were produced at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints that year, marking the final appearance of the design. Later in 1921, the Peace Dollar replaced the Morgan Dollar, officially ending the series after more than 40 years of intermittent minting.
