Obverse
On the obverse of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, there is a bust of Lady Liberty. One of the most recognizable coin portraits of all time, this effigy was designed by the legendary engraver George T. Morgan. Inspired by a teacher named Anna Williams, this bust shows Liberty facing left and wearing both a crown of wheat and a Phrygian cap. Youll see the year of release below the portrait and above it an inscription reading E PLURIBUS UNUM.
Reverse
The reverse side of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins features a heraldic eagle motif. In this rendition, the bird is in a front-facing position with its head turned to the left. Examine its talons and you will find arrows and an olive branch, which represent war and peace. Surrounding the bird there are decorative laurels and inscriptions which read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR.
History
Production of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins began following the Bland-Allison Act of 1878. This act required that the Treasury purchase a certain quantity of silver and use it for the minting of silver dollars. From 1878 until 1904, Morgan Dollars were minted at 4 branches of the US Mint: Carson City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New Orleans.
