Morgan Dollar Silver Coins were issued by the United States Mint in two separate periods of time, a rarity for any singular American coin design. The bulk of the coins were issued from 1878 to 1904, with the introduction of the coins in 1878 bringing an end to a five-year hiatus in American silver dollar coining. Today, you have the opportunity to get certified Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online at Provident Metals.

The Morgan Dollar Silver Coin was designed by George T. Morgan. Born in Birmingham, England, he worked for years there as a die engraver. After being denied a spot at the Royal Mint of England, he moved to the United States in 1876 and was hired as an assistant engraver with the United States Mint. William Barber, then Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, hired him. The Morgan Dollar is his most remembered design today, but he designed several different coins and finished his career as the 7th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1917 until his death in 1925.

Obverse

For the obverse design of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, you will find a depiction of Lady Liberty. This left-profile bust of Liberty was created by Morgan and shows her figure wearing a coronet crown with the word Liberty on it and a cap on her head holding most of her hair up in a bun. The inscriptions around the rim include E Pluribus Unum, 13 stars, and a date mark.

Reverse

In the reverse design of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is the heraldic eagle of the United States. Modified for the series by Morgan, it features a small eagle with an olive branch and arrows in its talons. The design includes a small wreath below the bird. There are inscriptions of United States of America, In God We Trust, and One Dollar.

History

The United States Mint relaunched its silver dollars in 1878 with the Morgan Dollar design after suspending the Seated Liberty Dollar in 1873. The Morgan Dollar was issued from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921. While the vast majority were released between 1878 and 1904, the largest single mintage year came in 1921.

Ordering

These Morgan Dollar Silver Coins have a Mint State 63 certification. The coins have slightly impaired mint luster, numerous small contact marks, a few scattered heavy marks, small hairlines visible without the aid of magnification, and even several detracting scuff marks.
