Two adults Mustangs stride across the obverse of each copper round; their manes flowing as they run before the Mustang Mountains in southeastern Arizona. “MUSTANG” is engraved above the design.

Mustangs are descendants of 16th century Spanish horses brought to America by explorers. The stallions are known for their size and speed, which were benefits to early pioneers on their lengthy journeys. Despite their utility, wild mustangs were hunted and abused in the mid-1950s. Laws prohibiting such activity were enacted in 1959 when President Richard Nixon signed the Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act in 1971. This act made provisions for the protection, study, and management of the animals.

The mountain range in the background of the obverse is the Mustang Mountains. At its highest peak, the mountain reaches 6,469 feet.

A common reverse on each round in the series displays a rendering of the United States with bald eagle soaring above. The national bird of the United States of America carries a banner in its beak that is inscribed with “By Thomas D. Rogers, Sr.” Other inscriptions read the round’s weight and purity, and “AMERICAN WILDLIFE SERIES”.

The dynamic obverse and reverse of each 1 oz Copper Mustang – along with the other 9 obverse designs in the American Wildlife Series – were created by Rogers, the one-time sculptor and engraver at the U.S. Mint. His vision and artistry helped create scenes of nature’s most unique animals and topography.
