The obverse of the Morgan Silver Dollar features an image of Lady Liberty. She is wearing a Phrygian cap, which symbolized release from slavery in ancient Greece. This design element first appeared on a U.S. coin in 1793 to represent America’s independence from British rule. The date, thirteen stars, and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are engraved at the periphery.
Each Morgan Silver Dollar displays an intricately engraved eagle with outstretched wings. The bird is surrounded by a wreath and the legend “IN GOD WE TRUST.” To symbolize America’s desire for peace, combined with its military strength, the eagle is shown clutching an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other. For coins struck at one of the branch facilities, the mintmark is present at the bottom of the reverse.
