The Wood Bison is the sixth and final piece in the Royal Canadian Mint’s Wildlife Series. The reverse features the lumbering animal, tail raised as it shuffles through the snow. The buffalo’s shaggy head is marked by its distinctive short horns. Behind it, evergreen trees rise into the horizon. The rim is marked with CANADA and FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR. The wood bison roams throughout Canada, and it is the largest land animal in North America — males can weigh more than 2,000 pounds! A herd of about 200 was discovered in 1957, and thanks to conservation efforts, it has since recovered to approximately 2,500. The wood bison is now considered a threatened species rather than endangered.
