History
The first coins minted in the Americas, the Spanish cob pieces were initially struck as a means of exporting silver deposits from colonial regions back to Spain. Rough-hewn in their appearance, the coins were created by cutting off clumps of silver from existing bars. They were known as cobs, which is derived from the Spanish word cabo, meaning end. This relates to the fact that the coins were literally cut off the end of silver bars.
