Canadian Maple Leaf Palladium Coins

In 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the world to a second major bullion coin program to rival the South African Krugerrand. The Canadian Maple Leaf pays homage to the natural splendor of Canada through its image of a sugar maple leaf. Since 1979, the variety of coins in this series has expanded from a single 1 oz gold coin to several gold weights, as well as silver, platinum, and palladium versions of the coin. In the program’s history, the Canadian Maple Leaf Palladium Coin is the youngest.

Brief History

Introducing the Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf coin, a trailblazer in the realm of palladium bullion since its inception in 2005 by the esteemed Royal Canadian Mint. Initially minted until 2007, with a brief hiatus in 2008 and a pause from 2010 to 2014, these coins made a triumphant return in 2015, maintaining the same impeccable standards and options.

Design Details

Crafted exclusively in 1 Troy oz palladium with a purity of .9995, these coins bear a face value of $50 (CAD) and showcase the timeless designs of the renowned Canadian Maple Leaf Series. On the obverse side, the effigy of the reigning British monarch is shown. This includes the following:

  • 2005-2023: Susanna Blunt’s rendition of Queen Elizabeth II is shown.
  • 2024-Present: Steven Rosati’s image of King Charles III is displayed.

The reverse side boasts Walter Ott’s iconic sugar maple leaf design, which made its debut in 1979 on the Gold Maple Leaf coin. Post-2015 editions of the Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf feature added security elements such as radial lines on both sides, a deterrent against counterfeiting. Additionally, a micro-laser privy mark with the last two digits of the date becomes visible under magnification.
