To honor this shared history, the US Mint revived both designs for todays collectors. Starting in 2023, Peace Dollars have been issued annually as collectible coins. Obverse
The obverse of the Peace Dollar Coin displays a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty designed by Anthony de Francisci. Liberty is shown wearing a radiant crown with rays extending outward to symbolize freedom and optimism. The artist modeled Liberty after his wife, Teresa, giving the design a youthful and modern look not seen on earlier US coin designs. The inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRVST, and the date mark.
Reverse
On the reverse of the Peace Dollar Silver Coin, a bald eagle rests peacefully while holding an olive branch. This imagery reflects the nations hope for lasting peace following World War I. The calm pose of the eagle contrasts with the more aggressive eagle imagery found on previous silver dollar designs. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR, and PEACE.
History
The original Peace Dollar debuted in late December 1921, with the first strikes produced at the Philadelphia Mint on December 28. The design was selected through a competition held by the Commission of Fine Arts, with Anthony de Francisci chosen to create a coin that symbolized peace after World War I. The earliest Peace Dollars featured a high-relief design, which delivered strong visual detail but proved impractical for long-term production.
