A portrait of Pope Francis I is featured on the obverse with the inscriptions of “POPE FRANCIS I,” “2013” and the initials “GM.” The reverse bears an image of Vatican City and is inscribed with “VATICAN CITY” and “ONE TROY OZ .999 FINE SILVER.”
Vatican City, established as an independent state in 1929, is ruled by and home to the pope. It is made up of 110 acres and is home to approximately 800 people, which makes it the smallest independent state in terms of area and residents.
