The Liberty Double Eagle is one of the most recognizable gold coin designs in the history of American coinage. Introduced in 1850, this $20 gold coin remained in production until 1933, featuring just two design series over its 84-year history. While the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is admired for its artistic appeal, the Liberty Double Eagle holds the honor of being the first and longest-running design for this denomination. Today, Pre-1900 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each Pre-1900 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin in this listing is graded MS61. Coins in this grade feature diminished mint luster and may display clusters of contact marks. Please note that the exact year of issue for the coins in this listing is not guaranteed, but all coins will date between 1850 and 1899. The certification labels and grading will come from either PCGS or NGC.
Obverse
The obverse of the $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin features a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. This design by James B. Longacre draws inspiration from Christian Gobrechts $10 Eagle, showcasing Liberty wearing a coronet crown surrounded by 13 stars. A date mark is included below the bust. The inscriptions read LIBERTY and the year of issue.
Reverse
On the reverse, the Great Seal of the United States is prominently displayed. This image of the bald eagle underwent three design changes during the Liberty Double Eagles production. The original Type I version lacked the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and used “TWENTY D.” for the denomination. In 1866, the Type II design introduced the motto above the eagle. Finally, the Type III design appeared in 1877, updating the denomination to read “TWENTY DOLLARS.” Other inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Please note specific inscriptions depend on the Types as noted above.
History
The $20 Double Eagle was introduced in 1850 as a response to the California Gold Rush, which brought an influx of gold into the United States. This denomination became the largest gold coin produced by the U.S. Mint, primarily used for bank-to-bank transfers and international trade. The Liberty Double Eagle, produced from 1850 to 1907, was designed by James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
