The final design available in the $1 US gold coin series was known as the Type 3 or Large Head Indian design. The design was created in 1856 by James B. Longacre and featured on the coin from that point until the end of the series in 1889. Provident Metals currently offers the Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coin Type 3 in Almost Uncirculated condition.
Highlights:
When you purchase a Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coin Type 3 in this product listing, Provident Metals has coins in Almost Uncirculated condition. Coins in AU condition have only the slightest signs of wear and tear on the highest points of the inscriptions and designs. Otherwise, the coins retain good mint luster and visual brilliance for the designs and inscriptions.
Please note the date marks can vary in this listing between 1856 and 1889. We are not able to guarantee the date mark on your coin, and if you purchase more than one you could get matching dates.
Obverse
On the obverse side of Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins is a left-profile portrait of Liberty. This was the third design of the collection and is a larger image of Liberty with the feathered headdress. Unlike the original design in Type 1, these coins have United States of America inscribed along the top rocker of the design element.
Reverse
The reverse face of the Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coin, you will find only the denomination, date mark, and a wreath. This is the second design of the reverse series and was created in 1854 by James B. Longacre. This redesign increased the size of the wreath and included inscriptions of 1 Dollar and a date mark.
History
The $1 Gold Coin was introduced by the United States Mint following an influx of gold to the Treasury Department following the California Gold Rush. The coins were issued regularly up until the Civil War, but hoarding during the Civil War and a lack of use by Americans resulted in the series eventually ending in 1889.
