The US $1 gold coin was a short-lived series of gold bullion coins issued by the United States in the second half of the 19th century. The Gold Dollar debuted amidst the California Gold Rush, but was canceled by the end of the 1880s. The coin went through three different Liberty designs on its obverse face through its 40 years in production. Today, you have the chance to get Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins Type 3 online at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a protective plastic flip!
  • Issued from 1856 to 1889!
  • Cleaned condition!
  • Contains .04837 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • The face value of $1 (USD) is backed by the United States.
  • Liberty with a large feathered headdress is on the obverse.
  • Coin denomination and wreath on the reverse.

The US $1 gold coin was introduced in 1849 with a design on the obverse from James B. Longacre and a reverse design from Peter Filatreu Cross. Longacres Liberty design was based on the famous Liberty Coronet in use on the Eagle gold denominations, but was only used until 1854. This was known as the Type 1 design. In 1854, Longacre redesigned the Liberty bust and replaced the coronet with a feathered headdress. This smaller head was known as the Type 2 design and used only until 1856. In 1856, Longacre redesigned the Liberty bust with a larger version of Libertys head and her feathered headdress. Known as the Type 3 design, it was used until 1889 when the series ended.

Obverse

Liberty is featured in left-profile relief on the obverse of the Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coin Type 3. Her figure here takes up more of the design field than the Type 2 image and has a straighter feathered headdress. The Type 3 has an inscription of United States of America around the Liberty bust, as opposed to the Type 1 that had 13 stars around Liberty instead.

Reverse

The coins denomination is featured on the reverse of Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins Type 3. This design is just the second on the reverse and was redesigned by Longacre in 1854. A smaller wreath was replaced with a larger wreath that encircles inscriptions of 1 Dollar and a date mark. The nation of issue was removed from this side of the coin in 1854 when Longacre redesigned the coins obverse and reverse images.

History

The $1 Indian Gold Coin was available from the United States Mint from 1856 to 1889, but the coins were not struck during the Civil War as many of the gold coins already in circulation were hoarded by Americans on both sides of the conflict.

Ordering

These Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins Type 3 are available with protective plastic flips and are cleaned specimens. Cleaned coins have signs of aging removed with chemicals, but this can result in loss of luster and visual appeal.
