The United States Mint issued a well-known silver dollar series until 1935, but its lesser-known gold dollar series was available for just 40 years in the mid and late-19th century. The Pre-33 $1 Gold Coin from the US Mint went through three obverse designs known as Types, with the Type 3 design the longest used in the series. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coin Types with certification online at Provident Metals.

All three of the obverse designs used in the Pre-33 $1 Gold Coin from the United States Mint were designed by James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the US Mint. Longacre originally created an obverse bust of Liberty similar to Christian Gobrechts Liberty Coronet. This was the Type 1 used from 1849 to 1854. Longacres first redesign came in 1854 when he introduced the Type 2 design with a smaller head for Liberty and a headdress on instead of the coronet. In 1856, this was again redesigned with the head size increased and the headdress straightened out. Type 3, as this design was known, was used from 1856 until the end of the series in 1889.

A left-profile bust of Lady Liberty features on the obverse of the Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coin. Liberty is shown with a larger, straighter feathered headdress on her head in this portrait with United States of America inscribed around the design edge.

The coin denomination and a wreath are shown on the reverse side of Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins. This design is actually just the Type 2 reverse in the series, but it was used with the Type 2 and Type 3 obverse designs. It features the words 1 Dollar and a date mark in the center, as well as a larger, fuller wreath around the design field.

The original reverse design in the series was actually created by Peter Filatreu Cross and boasted a smaller, thinner wreath on the reverse with the nation of issue inscribed on this side. When Longacre created the Type 2 design for the obverse and removed the circle of 13 stars, he placed the nation of issue on this side, removed it from the reverse, and enlarged the wreath in creating the Type 2 reverse design.

These Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins Type 3 are available in Mint State 65 condition. Coins in this condition have an above-average luster with the potential for a few light hairlines and several contact marks, some of which may include major distracting marks in the primary focal areas of the coin field. Please note date marks and grading house labels are chosen at random for all coins purchased and multiples may match one another.
