The third and final design of the $1 Gold Coin from the United States Mint was known as the Indian Gold Coin. The coin design was so-named because the bust of Liberty was no longer topped with a coronet crown, and instead featured a feathered headdress. Provident Metals currently has the Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins Type 3 available to you for online purchasing in Extra Fine condition.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual protective plastic flip!
  • Struck from 1856 to 1889!
  • Extra Fine condition!
  • Contains .04837 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Issued a face value of $1 (USD) by the government of the United States.
  • Liberty wearing a headdress is on the obverse.
  • Coin denomination and date mark on the reverse with a wreath.
  • Please note you can receive matching date marks when buying multiples.

When you buy the Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coin Type 3 in this Provident Metals listing, you will receive a gold coin that is in Extra Fine condition. The coins in this listing come with an individual protective plastic flip. Coins in Extra Fine condition have light wear overall on the highest areas of the design elements and inscriptions. Any wear and tear is limited to the high points and some 90% of the original mint luster remains on the coin.

Please note that Provident Metals does not guarantee the date marks on any of the coins you receive. All items are chosen at random once your payment is processed. If you buy more than one coin, you may receive matching date marks.

Obverse

Liberty is found on the obverse of the Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins Type 3. Designed in 1856 by James B. Longacre, this bust of Liberty was featured on the obverse of the coins until 1889 and depicts Liberty in left-profile relief with a tall feathered headdress on her head. The original design of 13 stars round Libertys bust is gone on the Type 3 and replaced by United States of America.

Reverse

The coin denomination is featured on the reverse of Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins. The original design on this face of the coin has a smaller wreath with the nation of issue inscribed around the field. However, these Type 3 coins have an inscription of 1 Dollar and a date mark in the center with a larger wreath around the entire design field.

History

Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins featured three different obverse designs and two different reverse designs. This reverse design on the Type 3 coin is actually the Type 2 image for the reverse. James B. Longacre redesigned this side in 1854 and it was used with the Type 2 and Type 3 obverse designs.
