In the 19th century, the United States Mint expanded its available gold coinage in circulation. The discovery of gold in California in 1848 resulted in an influx of gold in the US Treasury, and by 1849 there were two new gold denominations in circulation. Among them, the new $1 Liberty Gold Coin. Today, you have the chance to get Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins in certified condition online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The US One Dollar Gold Coin was available from 1849 to 1889. The coin featured three different iterations of Liberty on the obverse during its history and two different designs on the reverse during this same period. These coins are Type 1 specimens that were issued from 1849 to 1854.
Obverse
In the obverse design of Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins, you will find a left-profile portrait of Liberty. This side shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown. Her hair is in a bun at the back of her head with curls hanging down the side. There is an inscription of LIBERTY on the crown and a ring of 13 stars around her.
Reverse
For the reverse design element of $1 Liberty Gold Coins, the mint featured a simple depiction. This design shows inscriptions of 1 DOLLAR and a date mark inside a thin wreath that is tied by a bow at the bottom and is open at the top. Around this, you will find the inscription of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
History
James B. Longacre used the same obverse design for this coins debut in 1849 that he created for the Double Eagle Gold Coin the same year. He later redesigned Liberty for the Type 2 with a smaller head and an angled, feathered headdress, and again for the Type 3 with a larger head and straight, feathered headdress.
