The Pre-33 $1 Gold Coin from the United States Mint was introduced in 1849 and struck for the next 40 years. The coins varying designs can be deciphered as Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3, with each of these referring to the obverse design elements. The Type 1 design was used on the coin from 1849 to 1854 with designs from James B. Longacre, the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint at that time and Peter Filatreu Cross. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins Type 1 online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The United States Mint issued its first $1 gold coins in 1849 following an influx of gold into the Treasury Department. This was a result of the California Gold Rush. The US Mint introduced the coins with a design on the obverse from 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, James B. Longacre. His design was reminiscent of the Liberty design from Christian Gobrecht on the obverse of the US Eagle denominations. He would later redesign that image twice.
Obverse
The obverse side of Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins Type 1 is a depiction of Liberty in left-profile relief. She is shown with a circle of 13 stars around her figure in the Type 1 design set. The bust depicts Liberty with her hair in a loose bun and other stragglers flowing down the back of her neck. Liberty wears a coronet crown on her head with Liberty inscribed on it.
Reverse
On the reverse face of the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin Type 1 is the original design from the series. The design on this face of the gold coins includes the denomination as 1 Dollar at the center with a date mark below it and a thin wreath around those markings. Around the design element is an inscription of United States of America.
History
The $1 Gold Coin from the United States Mint was issued for 40 years, but the US Mint did not regularly strike the coins every year during this period. For example, during the Civil War the coins were not produced in great numbers and Americans were hoarding gold pieces out of fear of the economic repercussions of the conflict. In 1889, the series was canceled by the US Mint.
