Designed by James B. Longacre and Peter Filatreu Cross, the $1 Liberty Gold Coin was issued through the first five years of the 40-year gold coin program. The $1 Gold Coin from the US Mint was issued from 1849 to 1889 with three different obverse designs and two different reverse designs. Type 1 represented the first of each design version and was available from 1849 to 1854. Right now, you can buy Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins Type 1 online at Provident Metals.
With your purchase of a Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin Type 1, Provident Metals offers coins in Extra Fine condition in this particular listing. A coin in this condition has light wear visible throughout the highest areas of the design elements and inscriptions, but is still in good condition overall with up to 90% of its original mint luster still present. Each one of the coins in this listing comes with a protective plastic flip.
On the obverse side of the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins Type 1, you will find a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. This design is similar to the Liberty Coronet created by Christian Gobrecht, but was designed by James B. Longacre in 1849 for the $1 gold coin. The smaller surface area allows only for the left-profile bust of Liberty wearing the coronet crown, with 13 stars engraved around her figure.
The reverse face of Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins includes a design from Peter Filatreu Cross. The design on this field includes inscriptions of 1 Dollar and a date mark in the center with a thin wreath surrounding the central elements. Around the outer edge of the coins design field, there is an inscription of United States of America.
$1 Liberty Gold Coins were later redesigned on both the obverse and reverse fields. James B. Longacre created his own bust of Liberty in 1854 for the obverse to replace his coronet-inspired design. The smaller Liberty head bust included a feathered headdress. In that same, he also redesigned the reverse to enlarge the wreath and remove the nation of issue inscription. Longacre would again redesign the obverse in 1856 by enlarging the portrait of Liberty and straightening out the headdress.
