Obverse

The obverse field of the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin in this listing has the Type 3 design. Known as the larger head design, this left-profile bust of Liberty comes with a full feathered headdress on her head and the nation of issue inscribed around.

Reverse

On the reverse face of the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin, the second iteration of reverse design elements is featured. While the obverse side included three different designs during its history, the reverse used the second design during the second and third design issues of the obverse. This side includes the denomination and date mark in smaller text with a larger, full wreath around those markings.

History

All obverse designs of the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin were created by James B. Longacre. His first design was reminiscent of the Liberty Coronet design from the Gold Eagle denominations. In 1854, a smaller head with a feathered headdress was put on the coins. After just two years, a larger version of that head was created for the Type 3 release.
