From 1849 to 1889, the United States Mint issued a $1 (USD) gold coin that featured a unique image of Liberty not regularly used on other denominations of US coinage. The $1 Liberty Gold Coins went through three design types in its history, with the final Type 3 design used for the longest period of time from 1856 to 1889. Right now, you can get the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin with a certification online from Provident Metals.

  • Produced between 1856 and 1889!

With your purchase of the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin in this listing, you receive an item that has a Mint State 64 certification. Coins in this condition exhibit an average luster and mint strike with a few scattered contact marks both in and out of the primary focal points of the coin. There may be a few scattered hairlines and noticeable light scuff marks that might be within the design field.

Obverse

On the obverse is the third depiction of Lady Liberty for the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin. James B. Longacre created all three designs of Liberty for the series, with his Type 3 design using a larger Liberty head than the Type 2 and offering a change to the feathered headdress she wears. In the Type 3 design, the Liberty coronet is gone from the headdress, which is now upright with larger feathers.

Reverse

The reverse face of Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins includes the second version of the reverse design. Here, the denomination and date mark are depicted inside of a larger, fuller wreath that entirely encloses the date and denomination. The original design included a smaller wreath with the nation of issue on this side, but as that was moved to the obverse it left more room to enhance the size of the remaining features on the reverse.

History

James B. Longacre created both of the designs used throughout most of the $1 gold coins history. Peter Filatreu Cross created the first reverse design used from 1849 to 1854, with Longacres redesign taking its place from 1856 to 1889.
