The final design on the primary denomination in the US Eagle gold coin series was the Indian Eagle Gold design created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. One of four designs that Saint-Gaudens delivered to the United States Mint in 1907 before his death, the Indian Eagle design was used on the $10 denomination from 1907 to 1933 when US gold coining was halted by the end of the gold standard. Today, you can get the Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coin in Very Fine condition online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The design on the Pre-33 Indian Eagle Gold Coin was completed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and submitted to the US Mint. He died as a result of illness on August 3, 1907, and President Theodore Roosevelt insisted the new design from Saint-Gaudens be struck and finished that same month. Test strikes were given to President Roosevelt on August 31, 1907, and the coins were in circulation within weeks.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coin is a depiction of Liberty in left-profile relief. She wears an indigenous feathered headdress with the word Liberty inscribed on the headband of it. 13 stars are visible above her head and the date mark is featured below.
Reverse
The reverse side of the Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coins features an image of the American bald eagle at rest. The bald eagle is shown perched on a sheaf of arrows with its wings at its side. The eagles talons clutch a sheaf of arrows that is wrapped in an olive branch. The 1907 coins have United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, and Ten Dollars inscribed on this side. In 1908, following public outcry, In God We Trust was added to this side from 1908 to 1933.
History
The Indian Eagle Gold Coin design was the last design issued on the $10 Gold Eagle denomination. The coins did not have a reeded edge, but rather had stars engraved on the edge of the coin. From 1907 to 1911, 46 stars representing the number of states in the Union at that time featured on the edge. From 1912 onward, 48 stars were issued on the edge to reflect the admission of New Mexico and Arizona to the Union.
Ordering
