Designs

Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse of Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coins. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it depicts Liberty in left-profile relief with a feathered headdress. There are 13 stars in the design and date marks on the respective coins of 1908, 1910, and 1914. An American bald eagle features on the reverse side of each in the set. The bald eagle is perched on a sheaf of arrows with an olive branch. The inscriptions on all three coins include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and TEN DOLLARS. The 1908-D coin does not have the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, while the 1910-S and 1914-D coins do have the motto. Each coin has its respective mint mark stamped near the T in TEN DOLLARS.

History

The three coins in this set have unique background stories that play into the rarity of the specimens. The 1908-D No Motto was one of the last issues of No Motto $10 Indian Eagles and had a much lower mintage than the 1908-D With Motto coins from later in the year. Estimates suggest only 1,800 of these coins remain today. The 1910-S had a mintage of 811,000 coins from the San Francisco Mint, but only half of 1% of those survive today. The 1914-D was issued just as World War I started in Europe. Most of these specimens were heavily circulated in the US in the 1910s and 1920s, and later melted in large numbers by the federal government.
