Prior to 1933, the United States of America issued circulation coins that contained actual gold content. From 1838 to 1933, these coins featured 90% gold content with a balance of 10% copper to lend durability to each piece in circulation. The primary gold coin program at this time was the US Eagle denomination. The main denomination within the series was the Eagle, a $10 (USD) gold coin. Today, you have the chance to buy Pre-33 $10 Liberty Eagle 4-Coin Gold Sets online at Provident Metals.

The $10 Eagle Gold Coin from the United States Mint was a rarity when compared to its two counterparts from the 1795 debut. While the Half Eagle and Quarter Eagle went through as many as five designs over the course of the programs history, the Eagle Gold Coin went through just three in total. The Turban Head Liberty design was used initially on coins struck through 1804. When those coins were removed from circulation and replaced in 1838, the Liberty Head design from Christian Gobrecht featured on the coins until 1907, making it the longest-used design in the series. The collection concluded from 1907 to 1933 with Augustus Saint-Gaudens Indian Head Liberty design.

Obverse

On the obverse of Pre-33 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coins, you will find a left-profile portrait of Liberty. The design captures Liberty with her hair in a bun as she wears a coronet crown. The crown has an inscription of LIBERTY, with a ring of 13 stars around her head and a date mark at the bottom of the field.

Reverse

The reverse side of the gold coins in the Pre-33 $10 Liberty Eagle 4-Coin Set features the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design shows the front-facing bald eagle with its wings spread as it supports the US national shield. The field includes the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The field includes inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TEN D. Coins dated 1866 and later also feature a banner with IN GOD WE TRUST engraved.

History

The Liberty Head design was the longest-used image in the series, appearing on the $10 Eagle from 1838 to 1907, as well as the $5 Half Eagle and $2.50 Quarter Eagle until 1907. Even the $20 Double Eagle used this image from its 1850 debut until 1907.

Ordering

These Pre-33 $10 Liberty Eagle 4-Coin Gold Sets come with individual flips for each coin. All coins are in Extremely Fine-plus condition. This indicates a coin with light wear on the high points, as well as the potential for trace mint luster.

Provident Metals offers these coin sets with the potential for various or matching dates on the coins you receive. Similarly, the reverse designs could match or vary depending on the dates.
