Obverse

Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse of the Pre-33 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin. This design shows Liberty in left-profile relief, wearing a coronet crown, surrounded by 13 stars, with the date of issue at the bottom. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and a date mark.

Reverse

On the reverse of the $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coins, you’ll find the heraldic eagle, a symbol of American power and freedom. The design includes an American bald eagle with the US national shield, holding arrows and an olive branch. The Type II versions also feature the national motto. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TEN D., and the national motto on Type II versions.

History

The Liberty Gold Eagle design was the second to be used on the $10 Gold Eagle coins. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver of the US Mint, this design appeared on the coins from 1838 to 1907 with only one small update. The original Type I reverse (1838-1866) did not feature the national motto, while the Type II coins (1866-1907) included a banner with the motto.
