One of the first coins issued by the United States Mint was the Eagle gold coin. This unique domination had a face value in US dollars of $10, but was often referred to by its moniker of Eagle. The series included other denominations with similar monikers based on the $10 value of the Eagle. For example, the Half Eagle at $5 and the Quarter Eagle at $2.50. Featuring various designs through its history, the US Eagle was very popular in circulation and is a coveted collectible piece today. Provident Metals now has Pre-33 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coins available to you for purchase online.

Obverse

Lady Liberty features on the obverse of the Pre-33 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin in a design from Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. This design features Liberty in left-profile relief with a Coronet, or crown, on her head that holds back her hair and has Liberty inscribed on it. Libertys hair is up in a bun at the back of her head and inscriptions on this side include a ring of 13 stars with a date mark at the bottom.

Reverse

Gobrechts version of the heraldic eagle of the United States is featured on the reverse side of Pre-33 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coins. This design shows the American bald eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons with a small US shield on its chest. United States of America and Ten D. are inscribed on all coins. Those coins in this series with a date mark from 1838 to 1866 have no national motto. Coins from late 1866 through 1907 have an added banner above the eagle with the words In God We Trust inscribed.

History

The Liberty Eagle Gold Coin was issued by the United States Mint from 1838 to 1907. It was eventually replaced by Augustus Saint-Gaudens design of Liberty with a feathered headdress; a design often known as the Indian Eagle Gold Coin.
