In the 19th century, the United States Mint expanded its US Eagle Series with the debut of a $20 gold coin. Known as the Double Eagle, this new gold coin debuted in 1850 with the same Liberty Head design already in use on the Quarter Eagle, Half Eagle, and the Eagle. The Double Eagles debut came after the death of the original designer of the Liberty Head image, and as such, required modification of the image by then-US Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre. Provident Metals now has Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold 4-Coin Sets available to you for purchase online.
When you purchase one of these Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold 4-Coin Sets online at Provident Metals, you will receive a set with four coins in protective plastic flips. The set includes coins in Extremely Fine condition, indicating each one has light wear on the highest points and the potential for some trace of its original mint luster to remain. Please keep in mind that Provident Metals cannot guarantee if your four-coin set will have matching or varied date marks.
Lady Liberty is on the obverse side of the Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagles in this 4-coin gold set. The coins offer a left-profile portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet crown on her head with a ring of 13 stars around the design element. The date mark is at the bottom and LIBERTY is engraved on the coronet.
The heraldic eagle of the United States features on the reverse of the coins in the Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold 4-Coin Set. The design element includes a heraldic eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield on its chest. The eagle clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The ring of 13 stars over its head features the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST from 1866 onward, while the inscription of the face value is TWENTY D. for 1850-1877 coins and TWENTY DOLLARS from 1877 to 1907.
Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins were issued by five branch mints of the United States. The Philadelphia Mint issued the coins each year, with San Francisco issuing coins from 1854 to 1907. The New Orleans Mint issued coins from 1850 to 1861 and the Carson City Mint intermittently issued the coins from 1870 to 1893. The Denver Mint struck the coins as well during its final two years in 1906 and 1907.
