The United States Mint introduced the Double Eagle denomination in 1849 as the US Treasury experienced an influx of gold to its reserves amidst the California Gold Rush. The Double Eagle Gold Coin was the largest denomination in the US Eagle Series and most specimens were used for international trade rather than everyday commercial purchases. Provident Metals currently offers certified Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins to you for purchase online.
When you purchase a Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin through this product listing, Provident Metals has the coins available with a Mint State 64 certification. Coins in this condition showcase average mint luster with a few scattered hairlines or a small patch. You will also find light scattered marks, a few of which may be in the primary focal fields of the coin. Each coin has an attractive eye appeal.
The obverse of the Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin includes a depiction of Liberty known as the Coronet Head. Created in 1839 for the other denominations in the US Eagle Series by Christian Gobrecht, the design was adopted as the first image on the Liberty Double Eagle Gold coin. The obverse design remained the same throughout the series with Liberty in left-profile relief, a coronet crown on her head that reads Liberty, 13 stars around the design, and a date mark below.
On the reverse side of Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins is an image of the Great Seal of the United States. A unique twist on the heraldic eagle, it features the symbols of the US national shield, American bald eagle, an olive branch of peace, and arrows of war. From 1849 to 1866, the coin had no national motto and a face value marked as Twenty D. on this side. From 1866 to 1876, the national motto of In God We Trust was added. In 1877, the final addition arrived with the face value changed to Twenty Dollars.
Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins were eventually replaced in 1907 by the Saint-Gaudens design, an image that went on to become the most popular gold coin design in American history that was revived in 1986 for the American Eagle Gold Bullion coin.
