The Pre-33 Gold Quarter Eagle was the smallest denomination in the US Eagle Series and one of the most compact gold coins ever issued by the United States Mint. The final design for the series was the Indian Quarter Eagle, which stood out as the first incuse-struck coin in US history. Today, Pre-33 $2.50 Indian Quarter Eagle Gold Coins in AU58 condition are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These Pre-33 $2.50 Indian Quarter Eagle Gold Coins are in AU58 condition, which is the highest grade in the About Uncirculated range (50-58 on the Sheldon Scale). Coins with this designation display only minimal wear on the high points, with a near-full original mint luster. Please note that while we cannot guarantee specific years, if you order multiple coins, you may receive coins from the same year.
Obverse
The obverse of the $2.50 Indian Quarter Eagle Gold Coin features the left-facing profile of an indigenous figure. Created by Bela Lyon Pratt, this design was also used for the $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle and presents the figure wearing a traditional feathered headdress. The inscriptions include LIBERTY and the date mark.
Reverse
On the reverse of Pre-33 $2.50 Indian Quarter Eagle Gold Coins, an American bald eagle is shown perched on a sheaf of arrows with an olive branch intertwined. This detailed design, also by Pratt, was shared with the Half Eagle, reinforcing a consistent visual theme across both denominations. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2 1/2 DOLLARS.
History
The Indian Quarter Eagle was minted in 13 different years, with 15 circulation issues in total. While most years saw strikes from a single facility, 1911 and 1914 featured production at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. In 1925, Denver was the sole producer of these coins, marking the only year in the series where Philadelphia did not strike any.
