The final design issued in the Quarter Eagle Gold Series from the United States Mint was the Indian Eagle. Designed by Boston artist Bela Lyon Pratt, the Indian Eagle design featured on the Half Eagle and Quarter Eagle and was the only coin design in American history to be struck incuse for use in circulation. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase Pre-33 $2.50 Indian Quarter Eagle Gold Coins in Very Fine condition online at Provident Metals.
The Indian Head design featured on the Half Eagle and Quarter Eagle from 1908 to the conclusion of the US Eagle gold series were incuse strikes. These were the only coins in American history for use in circulation with such a strike. An incuse strike puts the design element into the surface of the coin rather than engraving onto the surface, leaving a flat surface.
An indigenous figure is featured on the obverse of the Pre-33 $2.50 Indian Quarter Eagle Gold Coin. This figure was one of the first indigenous figures featured on American coinage and is shown in left-profile relief. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include Liberty above the bust, 13 stars split on either side as six and seven, and a date mark at the bottom.
The American bald eagle is found on the reverse side of Pre-33 $2.50 Indian Quarter Eagle gold Coins. In this design, the American bald eagle is at rest. The bird is depicted on a sheaf of arrows that is wrapped in an olive branch. There are various inscriptions on this side of the coin that include United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, and 2 1/2 Dollars.
Indian Quarter Eagle Coins were available from 1908 to 1929. The coins were not as widely available during World War I, but were produced before and after the war. Unlike other denominations, the Quarter Eagle was suspended before the United States abandoned the gold standard in 1933.
These Pre-33 $2.50 Indian Quarter Eagle Gold Coins are in Very Fine condition. Coins in this condition have signs of wear and tear on the highest points of the designs, but otherwise have all fine details of the designs present.
