The Indian Head design featured on the Half Eagle and Quarter Eagle from 1908 to the conclusion of the US Eagle gold series were incuse strikes. These were the only coins in American history for use in circulation with such a strike. An incuse strike puts the design element into the surface of the coin rather than engraving onto the surface, leaving a flat surface.

Obverse

An indigenous figure is featured on the obverse of the Pre-33 $2.50 Indian Quarter Eagle Gold Coin. This figure was one of the first indigenous figures featured on American coinage and is shown in left-profile relief. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include Liberty above the bust, 13 stars split on either side as six and seven, and a date mark at the bottom.

History

Indian Quarter Eagle Coins were available from 1908 to 1929. The coins were not as widely available during World War I, but were produced before and after the war. Unlike other denominations, the Quarter Eagle was suspended before the United States abandoned the gold standard in 1933.
