Obverse

The obverse side of Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coins includes a left-profile bust of Liberty. This design comes from Christian Gobrecht and is known as the Coronet Head. The most popular coin design from the series, the Liberty Head design features a Lady Liberty bust in left-profile relief with a coronet crown on her head that reads Liberty and features 13 stars around the bust of Liberty. The date mark is at the bottom.

Reverse

On the reverse face of the Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coin is a depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Also designed by Gobrecht, the image features the American bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield on its chest. The bird clutches the arrows of war in one talon and the olive branch of peace in the other. United States of America is engraved above while 2 1/2 D. is engraved below.

History

The Coronet Head design was used on the Quarter Eagle from 1840 to 1907 and replaced by a design from Bela Lyon Pratt. The final image in the series created by Pratt was that of an indigenous figure with a headdress.
