The $5 Indian Half Eagle was the final design on the US Half Eagle gold coin program at the United States Mint. Introduced in 1908, the design was issued annually until the start of World War I and not issued again until 1929, a release that would prove to be the final one for this denomination before 1933 when all gold coining in the US ended. Obverse
On the obverse of Pre-33 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins in this 5-Coin Set, you will find Bela Lyon Pratts depiction of an indigenous tribal figure. This left-profile relief shows the individual wearing a feathered headdress and there are 13 stars included on the field. These stars are clustered with six in front of the figures face and seven behind its head. The word LIBERTY is engraved above the bust and 1908 below.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1908 Pre-33 $5 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coin features an American bald eagle. The eagle is set in left-profile relief with its wings resting at its side as it sits perched on a sheaf of arrows. The sheaf is wrapped in an olive branch. Inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and FIVE DOLLARS.
History
1908 Pre-33 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins have nearly a quarter Troy ounce of 90% gold, with 10% copper for balance in the metallic alloy. The Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins debut in 1908 brought with it the first-ever incuse coin strike in American history. Incuse strikes sink the design into the surface of the coin, meaning that the flat surface of the coin is actually the highest relief point on each one.
