This is one of the first US coins to feature a Native American and it shows the individual wearing a feathered headdress. The word Liberty is inscribed above, the date mark below, and 13 stars are around the design field.

Reverse

On the reverse side of Pre-33 $5 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins is an image of the American bald eagle. The eagle shown here is at rest on a sheaf of arrows that is wrapped in an olive branch. This side of the coin includes inscriptions of United States of America, In God We Trust, E Pluribus Unum, and Five Dollars.

History

The Indian Half Eagle Coin and Indian Quarter Eagle Coins were the first and only circulation US gold coins to feature incuse design strikes. Rather than engraving designs in 3D relief onto the surface of the coin, an incuse strike sinks the design elements into the surface of the coin, creating visual depth while leaving a flat, level surface.
