History
The Indian Eagle design was created by Bela Lyon Pratt, an artist and engraver from Boston, in 1908. The image was used on the obverse and reverse of the Half Eagle and Quarter Eagle gold coins and was the first-ever incuse strike for circulation in American history. Incuse strikes sink the design elements into the surface of the coin. The Indian Half Eagle was produced from 1908 to the start of World War I. The coins were not issued again until 1929 and only struck that one year.
