The Liberty Half Eagle was a $5 gold coin issued by the United States Mint from 1795 to 1929. This denomination in the US Eagle Series, like the others, had the Liberty Head design from Christian Gobrecht on its obverse face for the longest period of time. Liberty Head coins were available in this denomination from 1838 to 1908, with just nine date marks released in the 20th century before the coin design was changed. Right now, you can buy post-1900 Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle 4-Coin Gold Sets online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Provident Metals is pleased to offer the Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle 4-Coin Gold Set to you with post-1900 date marks only in the set. You will receive a total of four coins with different date marks, all of the coins issued between 1900 and 1908. The coins in this listing come with protective plastic flips and boast conditions of Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated. An XF+ coin is one that has light wear on the highest points of the design strike and possesses some of its original mint luster, or with slightly better visuals.
Obverse
Lady Liberty is found on the obverse side of the coins in the Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle 4-Coin Gold Set. This effigy of Liberty was created by Christian Gobrecht in 1838 and features Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet in her hair that reads Liberty. There are 13 stars around the effigy of Liberty with a date mark below the portrait.
Reverse
The heraldic eagle of the United States is present on the reverse field of Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins. This version of the heraldic eagle was the second to feature on the Half Eagle and includes a banner above the eagle that reads In God We Trust, a feature that was added to the coins in 1866. Other inscriptions include United States of America and Five D.
History
The Christian Gobrecht design known as the Liberty Head featured on US Eagles until 1907/1908, depending on denomination. On the Half Eagle, it was used from 1838 when the Charlotte and Dahlonega Mints first struck the coins until the last coins were struck at the Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Denver Mints in the 1900s.
