Proof American Eagle Gold Coins were introduced over the course of a three-year period when the program launched. The first coin issued was the 1 oz coin in 1986. The three fractional-weight coins were unveiled over the course of the next two years with the 1/2 oz coin in 1987 and the 1/4 and 1/10 oz coins in 1988. Right now, you can get the Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin from Provident Metals with random date marks and additional labels.

The Proof American Eagle Gold Coins in 1/4 oz weight were introduced in 1988 and have been available in every year since. The only date mark not available in the Proof American Eagle Gold Series is 2009 when the United States Mint suspended the production of all collectible coins due to intense demand for the bullion investment-grade coins.

Obverse

For the obverse of Proof American Eagle Gold Coins, the United States Mint uses Augustus Saint-Gaudens design of Liberty. Created in 1907, this design offers a front-facing portrait of Liberty in a free-flowing robe with a large torch held above her head in her right hand, an olive branch in her left hand, and the rays of the sun emerging from behind her figure. 50 stars around her figure represent each of the 50 United States.

Reverse

The reverse of Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins bears a unique design created in 1986 by Miley Busiek that is used only on the Proof American Eagle Gold Coins. It depicts a male eagle in flight over the nest as a female uses her wing to shield a young hatchling within the nest.

History

Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins have mintage figures that fluctuate from one year to the next based on demand. The highest available mintage figure was 98,028 in 1988 when the series debuted. Recent years have seen much lower figures such as 12,789 in 2013 and 15,775 in 2015.
