Proof American Eagle Gold Coins set a new standard for American gold coinage when introduced in 1986. The coins were the first gold coins issued by the United States Mint with a purity level greater than .900 gold content since 1837. The American Eagle Gold Coin was also the first gold coin produced by the United States Mint since 1933.

Obverse

On the obverse side of Proof American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coins, you will find the depiction of Liberty in front-facing relief. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907, this image first appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933. It was modified for the American Eagle Gold Coins to include 50 stars around the figure of Liberty and, for these proof coins, a W mint mark from the West Point Mint on this side.

Reverse

The reverse face of Proof American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coins bears the depiction of a family of American bald eagles. In this design, a female eagle shelters a young hatchling under her wing as a male eagle flies overhead. This image was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek specifically for the American Eagle Gold series.

History

American Eagle Gold coins have 22-karat gold content, the highest purity level for American coins in more than 150 years. The coins have 91.67% gold content with an additional 3% silver and 5.33% copper.
